Hokkaido University’s Nakagawa Experimental Forest 

In 2006, Bikky was buried near the roots of the big Sakhalin spruce known as Bikky’s tree in Hokkaido University’s Nakagawa Experimental Forest. A grave post was put up there.

(It is in a place with deep snow, so tours will only be available starting in June. There is a charge ※1000yen per group)

“Dogtooth violet

(Erythronium japonicum )” in the most northern Dogtooth violet in Japan.

“(Epiophlebia superstes)” the most northern epiophlebia superstes in Japan. 

This dragon fly is considered a living fossil because their shapes have not changed for 150 million years.

※Species endemic to Japan

“Bikky's tree”

The “Sakhalin spruce (Picea glehnii)” that is said to be loved by Bikky . 
He was buried at the root of this tree.

This tree is over four hundred years old.

The “Siberian dwarf pine (Pinus pumila)” Zone. 
Mountains surrounding Osasima(筬島) are 20 to 716 meters high above the sea but there is plenty of “Siberian dwarf pine(Pinus pumila)” growing.
※Siberian dwarf pine commonly grows to 2500 meters in height in Honshu(本州).
Alpine flowers are abundant there.

“Katsura tree

(Cercidiphyllum japonicum)” in the northern region.

Hokkaido University Nakagawa Experimental Forest is the habitat of many Katsura, 
and also regarded as the most northern Katsura tree in Japan.

Katsura leaves contain maltol, producing a sweet smell.
